Dead potatos

I heard a new expression recently: "dead potatos." It totally distrupted my train of thought. Apparently it means something is bad. Dead potatoes. Hmm...
Just how does a potato die? Is it a natural death, or can it be killed? Who would want to kill a potato? And, most importantly, is a dead potato really worse than one that is alive?
