Gay Pirates: The reason I started the blog

I think my idea for this blog started about the time of the following lunch conversation, and I've been meaning to write about it ever since.

It was an average lunch with a group of friends. In the middle of lunch I randomly remembered to tell Kristin that I had heard more about a movie we had seen a poster for. "Brokeback Mountain is about gay cowboys," I told the group, and we talked about that for awhile. Then another friend made a comment completely out of left field.
"Yeah, that's why I didn't like Pirates of the Caribbean," he said. You could almost feel all the heads turn toward him in immediate confusion.
"What?" came the reply almost in unison.
"Johnny Depp was totally effeminate in that movie," he defended himself.
"No, he wasn't," someone responded, "he was acting drunk!"
And then he said, with a completely straight face, "Ask any pirate, and they will tell you, he was acting gay."
By now the table was in hysterics, and the jokes just tumbled out.
"I suppose if pirates did find themselves on land and wanting to see a movie, they would want to see one about themselves. And imagine how shocked they would be to discover they were being portrayed as gay men!"
And on and on....I still laugh.
